Gabriel River

The Gabriel River (in French: rivière Gabriel) is a tributary of the east bank of the rivière du Pin which flows northward to the south bank of the rivière du Sud (Montmagny); the latter flows north-east to the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, in the administrative region of Chaudière-Appalaches, Quebec, Canada .

Geography

The Gabriel River has its source in a valley surrounded by mountains north of Montagne Grande Coulée in the municipality of Saint-Paul-de-Montminy in the Notre Dame Mountains.

From its source, the Gabriel River "flows in a valley steeped in 13.2 kilometres (8.2 mi) according to the following segments:

  • 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) north-west, up to the 6th rang road;
  • 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) west, up to the 5th rang road;
  • 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) west, passing southwest of the village of Saint-Paul-de-Montminy, to the limit between Saint-Paul-de-Montminy and Saint-Philémon;
  • 0.7 kilometres (0.43 mi) west, to Route Saint-Gabriel;
  • 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) westward, to the confluence of the rivière du Nord;
  • 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) westward, along route 216, to its confluence.[1]

The Gabriel River empties on the east bank of the rivière du Pin, on the south side of the route 216 bridge.

Toponymy

The toponym Rivière Gabriel was formalized on December 5, 1968 at the Commission de toponymie du Québec.[2]
