Eric Mark Meslin

Eric M. Meslin PhD FCAHS (born 20 October 1961) is a Canadian-American philosopher-bioethicist and current President and CEO of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA).[1]

Education

Meslin studied Philosophy at York University, and Philosophy and Bioethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University.

Academic career

Meslin is a Senior Fellow at PHG Foundation,[2] University of Cambridge; Academic Affiliate at HeLex University of Oxford;[3] and Adjunct Professor of Bioethics & Law, Indiana University Robert McKinney School of Law, Center for Law and Health.[4]

From 2001-2016 Meslin was Founding Director of the Indiana University Center for Bioethics, Associate Dean of Bioethics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and Endowed Professor of Bioethics,[5] Professor of Philosophy, Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics, and Professor of Public Health.

Meslin has also held visiting academic positions at Green Templeton College University of Oxford, University of Western Australia,[6] Curtin University,[7] and as Pierre de Fermat Chaire d’Excellence[8] at Université de Toulouse/INSERM.

Career

From 1998-2001 Meslin was Executive Director of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission[9] appointed by President Clinton.

From 1996-1998 Meslin was Bioethics Research Director in the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) program at the National Human Genome Research Institute.

From 1988-1996 Meslin was Director, Clinical Ethics Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Toronto, and Assistant Director, University of Toronto Centre for Bioethics.

Research

Meslin’s research has focused on bioethics aspects of genomics, international health, science policy, and human subjects research, with more than 200 papers, book chapters and other publications,[10] including two co-edited books.[11][12] His research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the National Institutes of Health, the Lilly Endowment, and the Richard M Fairbanks Foundation.

Meslin has been a member of advisory committees to the World Health Organization, UNESCO, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine,[13] UK Biobank,[14] CDC, ESOF,[15] and Genome Canada.[16]

Awards

He is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences,[17] a Chevalier de L’Order Nationale du Mérite conferred by the Government of France, and a Hastings Center Fellow.[18]
