Founded on 23 June 2009, the Foundation was publicly launched on 2 September 2010 by Dame Ellen MacArthur at the Science Museum, with the support of a group of 'Founding Partners', B&Q, BT, Cisco, National Grid and Renault[2] The charity was inspired by MacArthur's sailing experiences[2][3] and she put GBP 500,000 of her own money into the project. Another GBP 6 mil was raised by the five founding partners.
On 17 May 2017, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in conjunction with the Prince of Wales' International Sustainability Unit, launched a USD 2 million prize fund for innovations which work towards the management of waste plastics.[4][5]
