Eastman Institute for Oral Health
Eastman Institute for Oral Health of University of Rochester is a school of dentistry located at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, United States. It is unique among dental schools in the United States in that it does not have an undergraduate dental program.[4] It is affiliated with Strong Memorial Hospital.[5]

The institution records over 180,000 patient visits a year and receives a noteworthy over $9 million in research funding as a premier hub for oral health research in North America; its various programs also receive over 1,200 applications every year for 40 positions for an acceptance rate of 3.3%.[6] It underwent a $5.9 million renovation of clinical care facilities in 2011.[7] Despite its comparatively much smaller size to other dental schools, it has consistently ranked within the top 10 of National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) research funding to dental institutions; it recently ranked 7th in 2020[8]
History
In 1928, the University of Rochester Medical Center was instrumental in founding the discipline of oral biology in its creation of the first oral biology research center in the US; it morphed into the Department of Dental Research in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.[9]

Notable work
The foundations of bonding and adhesive dentistry were developed in 1955 by Dr. Michael Buonocore with his pioneering of the "acid etch technique."[17]
Dr. Michael Buonocore and colleagues published the first paper on the application of sealants to pits and fissures of developing adult teeth, today a widely used technique for caries prevention.[18]
The Eastman Institute for Oral Health was awarded the Gies Award for Achievement, Academic Dental Institution by the American Dental Education Association in 2016.[19] The community dentistry program has an annual budget of $2 million and reaches over 10,000 underserved or underinsured children annually.[20]

University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association (ADA).[21]
