Background and composition

"Diggin' on You" was written and produced by Babyface. The song released as the fourth and final single from their second studio album CrazySexyCool (1994).

Commercial performance

"Diggin' on You" was chosen to be released as the fourth single of CrazySexyCool, after the success of their previous single "Waterfalls" (1995), which spent seven weeks at number-one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at number five on the Hot 100 and Top 40 Mainstream charts, number six on the Rhythmic Top 40 chart, number seven on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and number eight on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.

In Australia, the song debuted at number 36 on January 21, 1996, eventually bowing at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart dated March 10, 1996.[1] "Diggin' on You" bowed at number eight on the Official New Zealand Music Chart issued November 26, 1995, where it dropped to number nine for two weeks before charting at number eight the chart dated December 17, 1995.[2]

On the UK Singles Chart, "Diggin' on You" peaked at number 18, which retained the position of their second single "Red Light Special" (1995), but was behind "Waterfalls".[3] In Ireland, the song peaked at number 21, on the chart dated November 2, 1995. In the Netherlands, "Diggin' on You" debuted at number 43 and peaked at number 32.[4]

Music video

The music video for the track was directed by F. Gary Gray, who previously collaborated with them on the video of "Waterfalls" that same year.

Gray wanted to make a "kind of movie/concert film."

“It was a challenge to do, to say the least,” says Gray. “We did it in the middle of their tour, and the venue gave us a hard time. That made it very difficult to shoot, and it placed a lot of limits on me creatively.”

The video uses the L.A. Live Mix and it shows the group performing the song during the Budweiser Superfest with additional backstage footage. Some special effects are used, notably at the beginning when the ladies appear on stage.

Portions of the performance footage were shot at the MGM Grand Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden.
