Diana al-Hadid

Diana al-Hadid (born 1981) is a Syrian-born American contemporary artist who creates sculptures, installations, and drawings using various media. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Early life and education

Al-Hadid was born in Aleppo, Syria.[1][2] At the age of five, she emigrated with her family to North Canton, Ohio.[3] Al-Hadid decided at the age of 11 that she wanted to be an artist.[4]

In 2003, Al-Hadid received a BA in art history and a BFA in sculpture from Kent State University in Ohio.[3] She received an MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.[3] In 2007, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.[5]

Work

Al-Hadid makes sculptures from simple materials such as cardboard, expanded polystyrene, plaster, and wax;[6] some are built in parts so that they can be assembled and disassembled.[3]

Collections holding her work include the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park,[7] Whitney Museum of American Art,[8] Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,[9] Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The C-Collection, Vaduz, Principality of Liechtenstein, and The Judith Rothschild Foundation. Al-Hadid has shown work at the Secession in Vienna, Austria;[10] Columbus College of Art and Design; Weatherspoon Art Museum; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Nasher Sculpture Center; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, La Conservera; Nevada Museum of Art; and the Hammer Museum.
