Darbandokeh

Darbandokeh (Arabic: دربيدونكه‎,[1] Kurdish: دەربەندۆک‎[2]) is a village located in the district of Shaqlawa, Kurdistan Region in Iraq. It is populated by Kurds[3] and received Assyrian refugees from the Assyrian genocide who later migrated.[4]

History

The Assyrians of Darbandokeh came right after the Assyrian genocide that took place within the Ottoman Empire. They came from the Shamezdin region, located within Hakkari, Turkey and are of the Nochiya tribe. In 1938, fifteen families totaling 108 people lived in the village.[5] As a result of forced migration in the late 20th century, today no Assyrians remain in the village of Darbandokeh. The Assyrian quarter of the village was resettled by pro-government Kurds after the entire village's population fled in 1963 due to fighting.[4]

Darbandokeh is the birthplace of the Patriarch of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, Mar Dinkha IV and former Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, Emanuel Kamber.[6]
