DJ Minx

Jennifer Witcher (known as DJ Minx) is a house and techno DJ and Producer born in Detroit, founder of the DJ collective 'Women on Wax',[1][2] and accompanying record label 'Women on Wax Recordings'.[1][3]

Career

Witcher began DJing in the 1990s, inspired by already established dance music DJs like Derrick May at Detroit's Music Institute.[2][1]

She engineered and hosted the electronic music show ‘Deep Space Radio’, on WGPR (Detroit),[1][4] and hosted the University of Canada weekly radio programme ‘Steamy Windows’ on CJAM 91.5 FM.[5] She went on to become a resident of Club Motor in Hamtramck.[1] Witcher was a featured performer at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000,[4] and has been a regular performer at the Detroit techno festival 'Movement',[3] as well as touring internationally.[1][2]

In 2003 her track ‘A Walk In The Park’- produced in 45 mins and released on the Airborne EP- was picked up, remixed and regularly played by Ricardo Villalobos, before being re-released in 2004 by Richie Hawtin’s label ‘Minus’. It went on to be remixed by several established DJs, including Magda, Matthew Dear, Josh Wink and Ricardo Villalobos.[1][6]

In 2016 Witcher was one of a roster of Detroit artists who performed at the Flint, Michigan, benefit ‘There’s Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)’.[7]

In 2020 Witcher launched the online clothing store Behind The Grüv.[5]

Women on Wax

In 1996 Witcher founded the DJ collective 'Women on Wax', promoting and providing a platform for female DJs from Detroit.[1][2]

In 2001 she established the record label ‘Women on Wax Recordings’, which puts out her own productions as well as those from emerging Detroit talent, including EPs from Viermalair, Diviniti and Animal Trax.[1][3] Witcher went on to create a sub-imprint of the label called W.O.W. B.A.M. (Women On Wax Bangin’ Ass Music), and collaborates and produces on other labels.[5][8]

Awards and accolades

In 2015 Mixmag named her as one of the 20 women who have shaped the history of Dance Music,[4] and in 2016 Time Out New York named her one of the “Best house music DJs of all time”.[9] In 2018 she was awarded the ‘Spirit of Detroit’ award, for “exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the quality of life.”[1][10][11]
