Cole Frenzel
Cole Douglas Frenzel (born March 13, 1990) is an American professional baseball infielder and outfielder in the New York Mets organization. He played collegiate and professional sports and later became a professional outdoor enthusiast. Cole is a 2018 Inductee to the Dickinson High School Hall of Fame.
Early life
In baseball Cole lettered 5 years the Dickinson Midgets. Cole holds many of North Dakota's state high school records in baseball and Dickinson high school records in baseball and hockey. From years 2007-2016 NDHSA was only allowed to use wooden bats in baseball. Cole owns the individual single season records for batting average (.542) home runs (9) RBI (41) and on-base-percentage (.848). In career stats for Dickinson High Cole owns the highest career statistics categories for batting average (.469) home runs (33) RBI (113) and career on-base-percentage (.622).[1][2] In football Cole was All Conference in 2008 and All State in 2009. In Dickinson High School Hockey Cole owns the career statistics record for total points with 137 points. In high school baseball Cole played on two State Championship teams in 2007 and 2009. Cole also played American Legion baseball for the Dickinson Rough Riders from 2005-2009 and owns the North Dakota sState record for career home runs with 87. He was on North Dakota American Legion State Championship teams in 2008 and 2009.
In 2009 Cole was named a Rawlings High School All-American, Under Armour All American and the North Dakota Gatorade Baseball player of the year.
In 2009 Cole was drafted out of high school as the 8th round pick # 282 of Major League Baseball's First Year player draft. Cole opted not to sign professionally and instead accepted his scholarship to the University of Arizona to play baseball for head coach Andy Lopez and major in business.
Cole played for the University of Arizona Wildcats for two seasons. In 2010 Cole started for the Wildcats as a true freshman until suffering a broken hamate bone in his right hand in the second series of the season against Long Beach State. Cole returned arter 8 weeks and averaged .356 with 9 HR and 33 RBIs in 77 at bats. After the 2010 season Cole went played summer baseball for the Lacrosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. Cole played in 39 games and hit .303 with 12 HR and 45 RBIs and achieved an on base percentage of .444.
In 2011 Cole led the Wildcats in batting average, doubles, hit by pitches, walks and on-base percentage. Cole earned Pacific 10 All-Conference awards and runner-up for PAC-10 Player of The Year. He tied a school record, reaching base safely in 59 games and also led the Pacific 10 conference in on base percentage of .481.[3][4] He has a career NCAA Division 1 batting average of .364 .[5]
Career
In 2011 Cole was drafted by the New York Mets in the 3rd round 77th overall in Major League Baseball's First Year Player Draft.[6] Cole played 5 seasons with the team. Cole took down awards such as New York Pen League player of the week in 2012 and played for the 2013 South Atlantic League Championship team. After the 2014 season Cole retired from baseball to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a professional outdoorsman. In 2016 Cole won North Dakota's state record Archery Mule Deer with a gross Score of 208 0/8 and Net typical P&Y score of 196 3/8.[7]
