Chase Atlantic formed and released their first studio EP Dalliancé in 2014, followed by their second EP Nostalgia, which was released in 2015 and spawned the viral single "Friends" and helped them achieve international popularity.[1] In early 2017 they signed to Warner Music Group and released a series of EPs—Part One, Part Two, and Part Three—to promote the release of their self-titled debut album, Chase Atlantic, in October 2017 as they launched their career as a full-time touring act. The band continued to release stand-alone singles "Numb to the Feeling" and "Tidal Wave" while on tour in 2018. The band's sixth EP, Don't Try This, was released on 25 January 2019. The group's second album, Phases, was released on 28 June 2019. The album was preceded by the three singles "Her", "Stuckinmybrain" and "Love Is (Not) Easy" which were released on 10 May 2019, 24 May 2019 and 7 June 2019, respectively. On August 14, 2020, Chase Atlantic signed with Fearless Records on the same day their single, "OUT THE ROOF" was released. On 8 October 2020, the single "MOLLY" was released. They started 2021 with the single "SLIDE" that was released on 29 January.[2]
History
Background
Before forming Chase Atlantic in 2014, Christian Anthony and Mitchel Cave were in a boy band called What About Tonight. They formed the band to audition for season 4 of The X Factor Australia, although they were eliminated in week two, coming in eleventh place.[3][4]
Meanwhile, Mitchel Cave's older brother, Clinton Cave, had a successful YouTube channel, Clinton Cave Music, where the brothers would release cover songs on a regular basis.[5] During this time the three members performed together for the first time under the name K.I.D.S. (Kind Imaginations. Destructive Situations.) where they released the original song, "Addicted".[6] They have since deleted all content from the channel[7] and since made it the official Chase Atlantic channel, although ClintonCaveMusic is still Youtube's user ID of the channel in the URL.
2014 – 2016
The trio first released music under the name Chase Atlantic when Clinton Cave recruited Mitchel and Christian to record for a university project where he had to record and produce an album himself.[8] They officially released the EP Dalliance on 26 May 2014.[9] Their early sound was often described as pop rock and Pop punk.[10] This release started gaining the band some popularity and they went on to release a single later in the year, "Meddle About". The next year, in 2015, the band featured the song on their second EP, Nostalgia, along with four other original songs.[11] With the release of this EP, Chase Atlantic gained more popularity with their song, "Friends" as it was featured in several Tumblr edits.[12] This release marked a push towards a more indie-influenced sound, drawing comparisons to bands such as The 1975.[5] Later in 2015, the band caught the eye of Benji and Joel Madden, members of triple-platinum selling rock band, Good Charlotte. The Madden brothers were so impressed they signed the group to their management company, MDDN.[13]
During their meetings with the Maddens, Chase Atlantic also started work on what was set to be their third studio EP, and first label-backed release, the Paradise EP. They did extensive promo for the EP,[14] including an Australian tour[15] where they played the EP in full and released a full music video trailer. They released the lead single off the EP, "Obsessive", in January 2016, which gathered them considerable buzz.[5][13] The band was intending to use the EP to leverage potential label deals, however lost the EP due to technical difficulties and never officially released it (Although they eventually rerecorded it and released physical copies during their 2018 World Tour).[16] Following that roadblock, MDDN flew the group to Los Angeles to record new music.[8]
2017 – 2018
Following a short hiatus, the band released their third EP 'Part One', in 2017 to coincide with their signing with Warner Brothers Records. This was the first installment in a series of EPs promoting their debut LP, marking yet another change for the band, introducing hip hop and R&B influences to their indie-rock sound. In March they released the EP 'Part Two'. That summer the band announced their first ever tour of the United States, opening for Sleeping with Sirens' Gossip: Up Close & Personal Tour, which they considered the beginning of their career as a touring act.[17][7] The day after that tour ended, 29 September 2017, the group released Part Three.[18]
Their self-titled debut album, Chase Atlantic, was released midway through the week after Part 3 came out, on 7 October 2017.[19] The album contained fourteen songs: One from Part One, two from Part two, three from Part Three, plus an additional eight songs which were not featured on any previous releases. Later in 2017, they went on their first headlining tour in the United States where they played sixteen shows across 11 states, followed by an Australian tour opening for Blackbear.[20][21]
In 2018, the band continued touring the US by opening for singer Lights in the United States, Sleeping With Sirens in Europe and the UK, then played US & UK festivals such as Bonaroo, Vans Warped Tour 2018, and Reading/Leeds Festival 2018.[22] They released standalone singles "Numb to the Feeling" and "Tidal Wave" that spring and summer, respectively.[23] That summer they also left Warner Bros. Records and went independent.[24]
That fall they announced their first ever headlining World Tour with Cherry Pools, Xavier Mayne, and R I L E Y (who is also their Tour Manager) as support acts.[25] Over that tour they played new (and in some cases unreleased) songs "You Too.", "Like a Rockstar" and "Devilish", as well as selling CDs of the Paradise EP. Those unreleased songs were later released on the January 2019 EP, Don't Try This.[26]
2019 – 2020
The group spent January to April 2019 in Los Angeles, working on their second album.[27] In April they announced the Phases Tour: North America for the summer of 2019, in support of their second album, and set the release date for 28 June 2019.[28] In 2020, was released the singles "OUT THE ROOF" and "MOLLY". They participated to "HIT MY LINE, a single with PLVTINUM as well.
2021 – Present
The group announced their upcoming third studio album BEAUTY IN DEATH, set to be released March 5th, 2021.[29] Following the announcement, in 29 January they released the third single "SLIDE".
Music style
Chase Atlantic has a unique style of music, which according to the band is "conjured up dark alternative pop punctuated by rock and R&B." Throughout their four years of producing music, their music style has changed from an alternative/pop sound to a more alternative/R&B sound, which the band resides with more.[30] They are a combination of R&B, rock, pop, and alternative; They are influenced by many artists from all these genres as well, such as Tame Impala and The Weeknd.[31]
