His first title defence would be against Lu Bin on 15 July 2018 on the Pacquiao-Matthysse undercard in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Cañizales managed to drop Bin twice, once in the eleventh round and again in the twelfth, en route to a twelve-round technical knockout (TKO) victory.[2]
For his second title defence, Cañizales faced former champion Sho Kimura. Cañizales managed to survive an aggressive start from Kimura, outworking the Japanese for most of the remainder of the fight, en route to a twelve-round unanimous decision (UD) victory.[3]
