Asa District, Yamaguchi

Asa (厚狭郡, Asa-gun) was a district located in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

As of 2003, the district had an estimated population of 22,781 within a total area of 89.89 km2.

In the past, the district included the cities of Ube (excluding Kiwa), San'yō-Onoda, and eastern Shimonoseki (Yoshida and Tamaki).

As a big merger before, Kusunoki and San'yō organized into two towns.

  • On November 1, 2004, the town of Kusunoki was merged into the expanded city of Ube (Currently, the city of Ube).
  • On March 22, 2005, the town of San'yō was merged with the city of Onoda merged (Currently, the city of San'yō-Onoda).

History

Timeline
  • 737 - Asa District mentioned for the first time in ancient documents.
  • 1650 - The administrative divisions of Chōshū Domain - Jae of the stamp has been set up, with a gun, and Osamu Yoshida and Osamu Hunaki stamp-size, is located.
  • 1879 - Due to the land reforms, the current Asa District was formed.
  • April 1, 1889 - Due to the municipal status enforcement, the villages of Futamatase, Nishi Atsushi, Deai, Ikuta, Fujiyama, Funaki, Kibe, Kōnan, Kotō, Magura, Ono, Sue, Takachiho, Tamaki, Ube and Yoshida. (16 villages)
  • September 1, 1917 - The village of Funaki was elevated to town status to become the town of Funaki. (1 town, 15 villages)
  • October 1, 1918 - The village of Nishi Atsushi was renamed and elevated to town status to become the town of Asa. (2 towns, 14 villages)
  • April 3, 1920 - The village of Sue was renamed and elevated to town status to become the town of Onoda. (3 towns, 13 villages)
  • 1921 - The district government abolished. Since then, the district remain for geographic reasons.
  • November 1, 1921 - The village of Ube was elevated to city status to become the city of Ube. (3 towns, 12 villages)
  • April 1, 1929 - The village of Deai was merged into the town of Asa.（3 towns, 11 villages）
  • August 1, 1931 - The village of Fujiyama was merged into the city of Ube. (3 towns, 10 villages)
  • April 1, 1938 - The village of Takachiho was elevated to town status to become the town of Takachiho. (4 towns, 9 villages)
  • November 3, 1940 - The towns of Takachiho and Onoda were merged to form the city of Onoda. (2 towns, 9 villages)
  • October 20, 1941 - The village of Kōnan was merged into the city of Ube. (2 towns, 8 villages)
  • June 1, 1948 - The village of 生田村 was renamed and elevated to town status to become the town of Habu. (3 towns, 7 villages)
  • October 1, 1954 - The villages of Kotō、Ono and Futamatase, along with the village of Higashikiwa (from Yoshiki District), were merged into the city of Ube. (3 towns, 4 villages)
  • April 1, 1955 - The town of Funaki, and the villages of Kibe and Magura were merged to create the town of Kusunoki. (3 towns, 2 villages)
  • July 1, 1955 - The villages of Tamaki and Yoshida were merged into the city of Shimonoseki. (3 towns)
  • September 30, 1956 - The towns of Asa and Habu were merged to create the town of San'yō. (2 towns)
  • November 1, 2004 - The town of Kusunoki was merged into the expanded city of Ube. (1 town)
  • March 22, 2005 - The town of San'yō was merged with the city of Onoda to create the city of San'yō-Onoda. Asa District was dissolved as a result of this merger.
