History
The Arizona State Poetry Society (ASPS) is a state-wide, non-profit organization that was established in 1965.[1] The society was formed by some of the same group that established the University of Arizona Poetry Center and the two remain associated.[2] In 2020 the organization has four regional affiliates in the state of Arizona.
Activities
ASPS operates monthly and annual poetry contests,[3] featuring 10 categories for the annual contest and three single categories per bimonthly for the member only contests. The categories include a variety of formats and topics, and winners are awarded cash prizes. The organization also supports the NFSPS national contests. The society publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Desert Voice, and a quarterly anthology featuring the prize-winning poems, titled Sandcutters, which is available from the online store and other booksellers.[4]
The Poetry Center maintains a guest house for visiting writers and supports a number of community events[5] and projects, including creative writing classes and workshop for the community, writing workshops in Arizona State prisons, and readings and workshops in Southern Arizona high schools.[1]
