Angelo De Rubeis

Angelo De Rubeis (1893–1954) was a governor of Italian Somalia in 1936.[1]

Life

Angelo De Rubeis (spelled also "De Rubens") was born in Trentola (near Napoli) in June 1893. He graduated as Attorney in 1916 and later volunteered during WW1, obtaining the Bronze Medal and other minor medals. In 1925 -as a member of the National Fascist Party- De Rubeis went to work in the administration of the Ministero delle Colonie in Libya, where since 1927 was an important manager of this Italian colony under Emilio De Bono.

In May 1936 was named Governor of Somalia.[2]

In 1937 he returned to Italy, where worked in Fascist & government organizations until the start of WW2. In 1940 went to Libya in the Polizia Africa Italiana, where he got a Silver Medal fighting the British Operation Compass. In late 1941 Angelo De Rubeis was named vice-governor of Libya.[3]

At the end of 1942 he returned to Rome, where he worked as General Manager of Civilian Services in the Ministero Africa italiana until September 1943. He collaborated with the Mussolini's Repubblica Sociale Italiana.

After the end of the war he was prosecuted because of his links with the Fascism and forced to retirement. He wrote some essays about his colonial experiences as governor and vice-governor. Angelo De Rubeis died in Rome in January 1954.
