Amu Dar'ya, sometimes written Amu Dar'ja, is a town in Lebap, Turkmenistan, on the river of the same name opposite the town of Atamurat. As of 1989, it had a population of 5,018.[1]

Geography

Amu Dar'ya is located at an altitude of 265 meters on the banks of the Amu-Darya River.

Transportation

Amu Dar'ya is on a branch of the Trans-Caspian railway that leads from Samarqand in Uzbekistan, through the far east of Turkmenistan, and then back to Termez in Uzbekistan and finally Dushanbe in Tajikistan. Amu Dar'ya is one of three stations on this line in Turkmenistan, along with Charshanga and Kirova.

A local road connects the city to Atamurat across the Amu-Darya river by a pontoon bridge. Other local roads connect it to the nearby villages of Kerkichi and Dostluk, and further east Charshanga and the eastern border with Uzbekistan. Another road leads north to the Uzbek town of Talimardzhan.
