Marketing

Following the official teaser which released on 28 August 2016 gained positive response and increased the anticipation of fans. The makers released the title track on 31 August 2016.[9] Sung by Arijit Singh, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the song received overwhelming applause and the official video song gained 20 million views, after its release. The song has also become quite the talk of the town because of the way, actor Ranbir Kapoor holds his gaze at the camera as he lip-syncs to Arijit's voice; the visual would give anybody goosebumps and in a recent interview, with India Today, Arijit revealed the making of the song and the video. Apparently, Ranbir sang the song first for the film, the visual of which one sees in the teaser, after which Arijit saw the video and sang keeping in mind Ranbir's facial expressions and body language. "This is going to be really interesting because this was perhaps the first time where I had to sing while looking at the actor. He (Ranbir) had already performed on that song. So I had to call for the video, watch the reflexes and match him. That was a very good experience for me," Arijit told PTI.[10]

The second single track "Bulleya" rendered by Amit Mishra and Shilpa Rao was released on 5 September 2016, and it gained positive response. The official video song crossed 200 million views in its lifetime. The song is a Sufi ballad number. The listeners overwhelmingly applauded for its beautiful lyrics, powerful music and crackling chemistry between the lead pair Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor, seems to be melodious and visually stunning. However, the song faced allegations of plagiarism, since the introductory riff of the track is allegedly lifted from Papa Roach's Last Resort. And when social media users realised this striking resemblance between the guitar riff portions of the two tracks, they couldn't hold back and vented their angst on social media. However, the music producer Sunny M.R. denied all allegations of plagiarism in an interview to SpotBoyE quoting that, "The Bulleya guitar riff is, musically, no where close to any of the songs it's being referred to. The notes are totally different. The riff is in a simple 1/16 timing widely used in many genres not limited to any specific song. This timing is also used for many background score pieces. It's like calling a rock song a copy of another rock song just because they use the same set of instruments."[11]

The third single track "Channa Mereya" was released on 9 September 2016, and also received overwhelming applause, praising the rendition of Arijit and the stunning visuals."Channa Mereya" is in JioSaavn's top songs of all time list.[12] The lyrics with Sufi touch brings out the emotions from a heart broken soul and then tries to heal the wounded soul with the extended poetic verse - "Sachi mohabbat shayad wahi hai, jisme junoon hai, par do dilon ki yaari mein bhi toh kitna sukoon hai" which means "True love is that which is fuelled by madness, but no less is the friendship of two hearts in which resides peace"[13][14] and also with the couplet - "Ek tarfa pyaar ki taqat hi kuch aur hoti hai. Auron ki rishton ki tarah ye do logo mei nahi battata, sirf mera haq hai ispe" which talks about unrequited love and its impact.[11] Karan Johar, director of the film, approved "Channa Mereya" the moment he heard the song, stated Bhattacharya in an interview with SpotboyE.[15] Ranbir Kapoor, on whose portrayed character the song is based, revealed that "Channa Mereya" is by far the best song in his entire career.[16]

After three singles from the film has been released, the makers released promos of "The Breakup Song", "Cutepie" and "Alizeh" on 23, 28 September and 1 October respectively. The soundtrack album in its entirety was released on 7 October 2016, followed by the audio jukebox which was launched on YouTube on 9 October 2016.[17][18][19]

Deluxe Edition

The deluxe edition of the film's soundtrack album was released on 11 November 2016. It features all the six songs, with three additional tracks including the reprised version of "Bulleya", the unplugged version of "Channa Mereya", and "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo" were released separately in the deluxe edition of the album, but not added in soundtrack album.[5] However, the latter of these, which was written by Fayyaz Hashmi and was originally composed by Sohail Rana,[20][21] was recreated and featured in the film too.

Pritam, once again has delivered chartbuster tracks. If I have to rank the songs, it'll go mostly in the same order as they were launched."[29] Koimoi.com rated 4 out of 5 stars to the album, stating that "Pritam gives us one of 2016’s best albums with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The confluence of good music, lyrics and vocals makes this soundtrack easily likable."[30] Bollywood Hungama rated the album 4/5 stars, stating that "The music of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is very good and is totally in lines with the expectations that you have from a film belonging to the romantic drama genre, as well as the cast that it features. Most of the songs do well instantly and majority would go on to have a long run even after the film is off the screens. Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya along with their team of singers show yet again that they have an eye on a popular score with a good blend of class and mass effect."[31] GlamSham rated the album 4 out of 5, and quoted that "The audio of AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL is excellent.. All the songs have universal appeal. The nation is drooling under the inebriated effects of the title track and the youth already clean bowled by 'Bulleya' and these two tracks are our favourites too. Pritam has surely come back with a big bang and provided Karan with the chartbusting music, a prerequisite of any successful love story. The superhit songs will surely prove to be the accelerator pad for the movie."[32]
