Abu Shahed Emon

Abu Shahed Emon (Bengali: আবু শাহেদ ইমন; ) is a Bangladeshi film director, writer and editor.[1][2] His debut feature film Jalal's Story became Bangladesh's entry for the 88th Academy award consideration for the best foreign language film category.[3][4][5][6][7] According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jalal's Story reflects a new cinema sensibility in Bangladeshi cinema[3] far away from the Bollywood-inspired local film practices.[8]

Biography

Abu Shahed Emon studied on Psychology at Dhaka University. Filmmaking idea first came into his mind when he was doing his graduation.[9] He attended University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse for doing his graduation in Communication. He also received Diploma in Screen and Media from Sydney Film School and after that got Advance Diploma in the same subject from RMIT University.[10] After Completing his Diploma and Advance Diploma from Australia he also received the Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) from the Korean National University of Arts[11][12]

In 2012, he made a short film titled The Container. In 2014 Emon's Debut Feature Jalal's Story[1] received a support for the Post-Production category[13][3][14] from the Asian Cinema Fund[15][16][17][4][18] Funds from Busan International Film Festival.[19][20] His another project the Tale of a Policeman[21] received a Script Development funding[21] from the Asian Cinema Fund in 2011.[22][23] The Tale of a Policeman also participated in the Asian Project Market (APM) in 2011[24] and received the Goteborg Film Festival Fund[25][26][27][28] But later he changes the name of the film from 'The tale of a Policeman' to 'A Foolish Man' (Apodartho).[29] Emon is planning to make 'A Foolish Man'[30] as his next feature film project.[31][32] He also produced the first anthology film of Bangladesh titled Sincerely Yours, Dhaka.
