1988 United States men's Olympic basketball team
The 1988 United States men's Olympic basketball team represented the United States at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The team's head coach was John Thompson, of Georgetown University. It was the first time that Team USA won the Summer Olympics basketball tournament's bronze medal, and the last time that they were represented by a basketball team that didn't feature NBA players,[2] as NBA players were allowed to compete at the Olympics, starting with the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, other teams were able to use players that were de facto professionals, but that were still classified at that time as amateurs by FIBA. The most prominent examples of this were the Soviet national team and the Yugoslav national team, which used players who were being paid by their states. Also, unlike the American team that was made up of college players aged 20–23, the Soviets and Yugoslavs featured multiple players who had experience playing at the Olympic level.[3]
